Sleep Apnea and Snoring
Snoring is caused by a vibration in the respiratory tubes that results in obstructed air movement causing a sound while sleeping. Snoring is more than just an annoying sound; it can affect sleep patterns, personal relationships, and overall health, happiness and wellbeing. Snoring, however, is not something you have to live with. Snoring is generally caused in those who have extra throat and nasal tissue, so it is more prone to vibration that causes sound.
Snoring can also be a symptom of sleep apnea, a condition that can be life-threatening. Sleep apnea occurs when a person stops breathing while asleep causing the brain to be deprived of oxygen.
Two types of sleep apnea exist:
- Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common type of sleep apnea. This type of sleep disorder occurs when there is a blockage of the airways. This blockage is usually caused by soft tissue that collapses in the back of the throat while sleeping.
- Central sleep apnea is the second type of sleep apnea. Unlike OSA, with central sleep apnea, the airway is not blocked. The brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe. This is caused by instability in the respiratory system.
