Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are treatment methods designed to restore the function to teeth that have been damaged. They are often recommended when the damage is too great to be repaired with a traditional filling, but a dental crown is not necessary.
Inlays and onlays are custom made using an impression of your tooth and therefore, require two visits to our office. On your first visit, an impression of your tooth or teeth will be taken so that your custom inlay or onlay can be constructed. Once it is complete, you will return to have it installed.
Inlays are bonded to the interior of a tooth, but will not cover any of the cusps, or points, of a tooth; only the area inside these points. Onlays, on the other hand, cover at least one of the tooth’s cusps, or points. Onlays are an excellent option for restoring the chewing surface of a damaged tooth while allowing the tooth to retain more of its original structure than if it were replaced with a dental crown.
