Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in many foods and water sources. It has been proven to protect our teeth from cavities.
How fluoride applications can protect your teeth from decay
Minerals affect the enamel of the tooth in two ways: through demineralization and remineralization. Acids form from plaque bacteria and sugars in your mouth, leading to the loss of minerals, also known as demineralization, which launches an attack on your tooth enamel. On the contrary, minerals such as fluoride, calcium and phosphate which are obtained from the foods and water consumed, protect the enamel of the teeth through remineralization. When demineralization surpasses remineralization, tooth decay can occur.
It is widely recommended that infants and children between the ages of six months and 16 years be exposed to fluoride and in most cases, receive professional fluoride treatments as part of their regular dental care. Adults at high risk for cavities may also benefit from fluoride applications. Topical fluoride applied in our office can prevent tooth decay and strengthen teeth.
